The festive season is here, but unfortunately fraudsters don’t take holidays. Cybercriminals are out there, looking to steal your personal information and money. We’ve got some tips on how to stay ahead of the Grinch and protect yourself from scams.

Watch for package delivery scams

If you’re anxiously awaiting the delivery of some packages from online purchases, be alert for fraudulent shipping notices. If you click on a fake delivery alert, it may download malware on your device. Instead, use the tracking number provided in your confirmation email to see where your package is.

Take a minute to check that website is real

This time of year scammers take advantage of busy online traffic by creating “spoofed” websites, fake emails and social media posts with deals that are too good to be true. Beware of phishing and don’t click on links from unknown sources, especially those offering prizes or special deals.

Beware of fake offers

Avoid being caught in a fake offer by hovering over a link to carefully check the address and looking for red flags like misspelled words. Listen to your gut! If you have doubts, get the phone number from the company’s website (don’t use the number in the email, post or text—it could be fake) and call to see if the deal is legitimate.

Shop at secure websites

When you're shopping online, look for authenticated websites that have "https:" in the web address (not http:) and a padlock symbol for secure payment. If you see a pop-up page, be wary if it prompts you to download software or tries to create a false sense of urgency, such as, "Deal ends in 2 hours!" or "Your computer has a virus".

Be cautious when sharing sensitive personal details online and protect your payment information. If you get a phone, text, or email asking you for banking details, your password or PIN, it’s fraudulent! Don’t respond.

Make 'tap' payments at the cashier

Make tap payments wherever possible when shopping at stores. This helps prevent attempts at skimming your card or spying on you when you enter your PIN.

Be a cautious Marketplace buyer

Social media sites like Facebook Marketplace can be tricky. When you decide to buy an item, make sure you meet the seller in a public place, use cash, and check that the item is what you expected and in working condition. Get more tips here.
