Thinking and acting locally since 1946
In May 1945, a group of Islanders met over coffee to envision a different way of banking. It involved putting people's needs first and using local money to do local good. A year later, "Nanaimo & District Credit Union" was officially incorporated and opened for business with a small office in the corner of a bicycle shop.
Since those humble beginnings, Coastal Community has grown through mergers and acquisitions and implemented countless technological advances. Our co-operative values live on today through our vision and purpose statements along with our core values. These guide our actions to improve financial health for you and our communities.
Imagine knowing what you needed financially and understanding exactly how to get there. What would that mean for you, your family and your future?
We want that feeling of confidence and security, of feeling financially healthy, for everyone. That’s why we’re committed to helping Islanders improve their financial health so that they can get through hard times, be better prepared for the unexpected and achieve a happy tomorrow.
There’s a reason why ‘Community’ is in our name. It’s because it’s a key focus of ours and acts as a reminder for us to keep doing good locally.
The ripple effects that result contribute to stronger local economies, healthier communities, more financially resilient Islanders and prosperous local businesses. Thanks to your and our employees’ support, we’re making some pretty awesome differences in the places we call home.
At Coastal Community, our employees are our greatest strength. They are the ones to help our members and clients improve their financial health so they can achieve their goals and dreams.
Coastal Community works to build a culture of leadership and innovation by providing opportunities for our employees to pursue both internal and external education and training.
Our employees love our island communities because they live, work and play here. As an organization it’s important that we find ways to support their volunteer efforts for causes they’re passionate about, whether it be to help with a beach clean-up, coach their children’s sports teams or by sharing their knowledge and expertise by sitting on a board for a local not-for profit organization.
How do we support our progressive work environment? By asking and listening. By encouraging leadership and empowering our teams. And we’ll keep doing these things because we know that when our employees succeed, you and our communities succeed.
